This blog is part of a project borne during my travels as a professional photojournalist. For years, I have worked with bulky digital cameras, always mindful of the technical maneuvers from setting the shutter speed and aperture to editing and toning on a computer screen. In the last few years I have discovered that my iPhone has allowed me to capture scenes without feeling that I am once again on the job. To “point and shoot” has been a liberating experience. It has allowed me to rediscover the excitement of seeing imperfections and happy accidents rendered through the lens of my handheld device. I am able to create imagery, edit, and transmit all the images straight to this blog, creating a modern and efficient workflow for the most inefficient of pursuits - self expression. - Benjamin Lowy All Images are copyrighted @Benjamin Lowy

44th Street Walkscape | August 16, 2014
We live in a time of radical documentation: Cameras are within easy reach and CCTVs record our every move. Our landscape and street corners are painstakingly documented. Time and space are mere elements to be observed, recorded and stored away.
My response has been to deconstruct and compress all these elements into a kaleidoscope of overlapping imagery. Walkscapes presents both sides of our visual tendencies: the obsessive documentation of the quotidian and our growing need to retain a modicum of anonymity.
The images are made from 30-100 merged pictures taken as I walk down a city block. All are made “in-phone” at the moment of capture. You can view more at @conceptual_ben

Nairobi, Kenya | February 2007

I made this image of playful juvenile orphaned elephants at the David Sheldrickk Wildlife Trust @dswt with @marvilacar a few years ago. The organization is doing an amazing job trying to save the African Elephant.

Today is World Elephant Day 2014.

"Elephant numbers have dropped by 62% over the last decade, and they could be mostly extinct by the end of the next decade. An estimated 100 African elephants are killed each day by poachers seeking ivory, meat and body parts, leaving only 400,000 remaining. An insatiable lust for ivory products in the Asian market makes the illegal ivory trade extremely profitable, and has led to the slaughter of tens of thousands of African elephants. Between 2010 and 2014, the price of ivory in China has tripled, driving illicit poaching through the roof. If the elephants are to survive, the demand for ivory must be drastically reduced."

"What are the advantages of using an iPhone?"

Photojournalist Benjamin Lowy talks to Richard Aedy, of the Australian Broadcasting Company Radio Network, about the virtues of using a mobile phone in the field. In the above video, Lowy, who has made mobile-phone images while working in Libya, Afghanistan, and his own backyard of New York City, explains how he chooses the right tool for the job. As for the question above, Lowy says:

When you shoot with an SLR or rangefinder or any type of camera, you’re taking this huge black box and throwing it in front of your face. And you’re blocking out your ability to interact with your subject. Sometimes that can be good if you need if you need to cut your empathy off, so like if you’re at a funeral and you need to pull yourself emotionally out of a situation. But a lot of times I’m just talking to someone out on the street, and all of the sudden I am cutting the level of empathy and the level of interaction and intimacy with people by putting a camera against your face. So by using the phone I can keep eye contact with the people I’m photographing.
